Pull out drawers . . .

For those of you who commented on pull out drawers for heavy items like pots and pans, how much weight do they bear or were you told that? What company made your cabinets? Did you self install or have them installed? Have you had any difficulty with weight or the glide mechanism? Thanks for all the advise . . . it helps to hear from people who actually use a product and their first-hand experiences.

  1. I have not had first hand experience with the pull out drawers, but I have seen my neighbors have them. I played around with them, and they make it so easy to reach what's in the back. My husband says that most of "those glides" can hold about 50 pounds. If you're handy, I say do it yourself and save a lot of money, but if you're like me who will probably get everything backwards, I say pay to get them installed. Have you walked around Lowe's or RC Willey? It might give you ideas on what you might like or not like, plus you get a chance to play around with the cabinets. Oh! Did I mention that I love our Granite countertop and backsplash behind the stove?

  2. My mom moved into her new townhouse 2 years ago, and the builders (KB Homes) included pull out drawers. I tried it out, and it made getting things in the back a lot easier. In my house, I don't have that kind of luxury, so sometimes when I need to get something from the back, I have to get down on my knees and stretch my arms out to reach for what I want. Definitely go with the pull out drawers.

When we had to replace the bottom cabinets in our house, we were fortunate enough to get pull out drawers. They are a knee and back saver for my husband. We have them in two of the three cabinets. When my husband needs something from that third cabinet, he calls me to be the contortionist and retrieve the item. They are a bit more expensive, but sometimes you can get a deal if you shop around. If you hire a handyman, he may know some cabinet suppliers who can offer you a discount.
