Refrigerators

What style of refrigerators have you owned? My first two were the old standard with the freezer on top. A few years after the side-by-side became popular, I jumped on the bandwagon and bought one. Honestly, I have never been happy with that ‘frig. Belatedly, I discovered the freezer and cooler shelves were too narrow for wide items and I was still stooping to reach fresh fruits and vegetables. As I consider a new ‘frig, I am being more cautious. Styles have changed again and the new models feature top double or French doors with a bottom freezer.

  1. I have the side by side type and agree that some items are just too wide to fit properly. My sister has the one with the freezer at the bottom and it seems like it would work better. Most people rely on the items that are in the refridgerator side, so it would only make sense to have that on the top portion, so you can reach things easier. On another note, I don't prefer to have the refridgerators that are stainless steel, especially when you have kids around. It is a magnet for fingerprints and smudges. Plus, you have to use a special stainless steel cleaner solvent, which is just an additional cost.

  2. The best thing I ever used on stainless steel was a bottle of iso. alcohol. Cut through the stains and oil and left a spotless surface without a great deal of effort.

  3. I have an LG side by side with a smudge resistant surface. Yes, some items don't quite fit in the fridge anymore...like pizza. However, I'm trying not to eat as much of that anymore. I would vote for the french doors with the freezer on the bottom. Many of my friends have this type and can place large platters on the shelves when entertaining. They also like having the freezer on the bottom with the pull out shelves inside. Just can't seem to avoid that bending over problem!

  4. Sue, I have the old fashioned freezer on the top and single door fridge. No ice or water in the door. It is white, and the previous owner placed a retrofit black plastic facing on it to make it look "modern". The truth is, I haven't given it much thought. As long as it keeps my food cold and my frozens frozen, I am ok with it. However, my daughter has one of those "newfangled" freezer at the bottom and she loves it.

  5. I like the look of the side by side doors on top with the drawer to the freezer on the bottom. We have the side by side now, and I agree with you about having to stoop for the fruits and veggies and it being too narrow.

  6. I currently have a side-by-side one, and it's okay. Sometimes after we go grocery shopping I realize that our fridge is too small so that would be my only grip.

I do like the double doors on top with the freezer on the bottom. It's much larger so you would need the space to fit that unit.

  7. I think the double door on top, freezer on bottom has a more stylish look. But they are larger and you have to be sure it will fit. I know we never have enough frig space at our house. We have one in and one outside. The colors seem to come and go as far as style, I personally don't really like the stainless steel,my new favorite in the kitchen is RED!!

  8. I have the freezer at the top. I have thought when I purchase again, I would like the water on the door but now I am using filtered water. I have noticed the space issue in my sister's side by side fridge. I hate the idea of bending over to find things in the freezer for the new kind but yet, I bend over to get things out of my hydrator drawers. And that is what will keep us young, right? Have you read any articles on them? How about checking out the ratings in Consumer Reports and comparing those ratings to the old freezer on the top kind?

  9. Jenn, RED? you are certainly not color challenged!

Pam, I have never wanted the ice or water dispenser. I worry about contamination of lines, leaking, etc. I am content with a Brita filter, since I can clean the container thoroughly and change the filter as needed. I visited a friend today who had bought a new Samsung (good ratings) French door . . . talk about a behemoth, hmmm.

  10. The one with the freezer on the bottom would be more efficient because cold air sinks.
